The Legislative arm of Owan West local government council in Edo state has impeached its leader, Hon. Joy Ohonyon.
The impeachment was carried out by legislative council members, citing allegations of improper dressing during plenary, divulging official information, preventing plenary sessions, wrong use of parliamentary language, and lacking the intellectual capacity to lead the House.
The move for impeachment was initiated by Samuel Aweh and eight other members of the House, who signed a petition for Ohonyon’s removal.
The motion for impeachment was subsequently moved by Felix Atiba and seconded by Elijah Ohimai.
The petitioners asserted that the impeachment process was under section 19 of Edo State Local Government Law, as amended in 2002, and order 13, rule 3 of the standard order and rule of the legislative councils in Edo State.
The petition highlighted concerns about Ohonyon’s capability to preside over plenaries, questioning her intellectual abilities, and accusing her of flippant behaviour and divulging official information, which they deemed detrimental to the business of the House.
Following the successful impeachment, the House unanimously elected Mr. Saturday Ohimai Ezomon as the replacement for Mrs. Joy Ohonyon.
