The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) has condemned the continued cases of police brutality in Nigeria three years after the October 2020 nationwide #EndSARS protests. The group called for an end to police brutality and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit notorious for extrajudicial killings and human rights violations. As Nigerians mark the third anniversary of the violently suppressed protests, YRC demands justice for the victims and calls for an end to police brutality, state repression, and all anti-poor economic policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The YRC states that the situation is worrisome, especially in a country that prides itself on being a democratic state. They call for freedom for political prisoners, students, youth, and workers activists being politically victimized on campuses and workplaces across Nigeria, as well as justice for all victims of police and army killings across the country.
The YRC also demands compensation for those brutally killed and maimed across the country, immediate release of any #EndSARS protester still held in any facility across the nation, and adequate compensation for unjust incarceration. They call on Nigerian youths to join the YRC and unite against all forms of oppression, hike in school fees, falling living standards, police brutality, and looting of public resources by the ruling elites.
