The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter has condoled with the management of Tansi International College, Awka, over three of its pupils killed by lightning.
The association’s condolence is contained in a statement signed by its chairman and Secretary, Mr Chimezie Anaso and Mr Uche Ndeke, respectively, in Awka on Tuesday.
SWAN also condoled with the parents and families of the victims.
Recall that lightning struck the football pitch of the school on November 4 while the pupils were playing in the rain, hitting nine of them and leaving three dead.
The association described the tragedy as a huge and irreparable loss to their parents, the school, society and the sports community in particular.
“As a body of sports journalists in Anambra, we are deeply saddened because we recognise the positive role Tansi College has played in the development of sports by making its pitch available for sporting activities.
“We appreciate that this particular pitch was one of the venues for the Anambra Independent Football League, the biggest independently-run football league as well as other competitions,” it said.
SWAN also condoled with Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor and Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, owners of the college for the loss and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
“We also pray that God will grant all the bereaved the courage to bear the losses,” it said.
