In response to their President Joe Ajaero’s beating and kidnapping, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have declared a nationwide strike for November 8, 2023.
Due to their alleged involvement in the abuse and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers, the union has demanded the immediate dismissal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Area Commander, and the Commissioner of Police.
During a demonstration against the Imo State Government’s underpayment of workers, Ajaero was taken into custody by the police. The Governor of Imo State and the Commissioner of Police were charged by the NLC of plotting to kidnap Ajaero.
The governor and the state’s police command disputed that they had arrested Ajaero, stating that he was in Warri for a large-scale protest rally.
