France has imposed new immigration restrictions on international students, including Nigerians, to prevent them from bringing their families to the country.
The law, passed by parliament, makes it more difficult for migrants to bring family members to France and delays their access to welfare benefits.
It also bans detaining minors in detention centres and discriminates between citizens and migrants in determining eligibility for benefits.
The UK government’s decision came in response to the surge in net migration, leading to Nigerian students looking elsewhere for their Japa plans. The UK’s skilled worker visa has also experienced reshuffling, with the minimum salary requirement for obtaining one increased from £26,000 to £38,700.
Canada has also announced new proof of funds requirements for international students, with a new fee of ₦16,050,000.0000 ($20,000) starting from January 2024.
