The Bauchi State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has urged farmers in the state to harvest their crops right away so that herders can graze freely and conflicts between farmers and herders can be avoided.

This information was included in a statement that SP Ahmed Wakili, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), made available to reporters on Saturday.

The Command has identified various social vices as potential security threats for the autumn season in the state and other parts of the country, including herders’/farmers’ clashes, communal clashes, armed robberies, kidnapping and abduction, road accidents, theft of farm produce, mischief and thuggery.

On that point, the Command urged everyone to take proactive security measures, which they must all be aware of and follow in order to improve the state’s overall safety and security.

According to a police spokeswoman, “the Command called on the respective organs to refrain from acts of mischief or any acts that could lead to the breakdown of law and order and Public peace” in order to prevent herders-farmers and communal conflicts. But before it turns into the aforementioned situation, farmers are encouraged to remove their crops in advance. “Also, all herders are unequivocally warned to desist from trespassing into farmer’s crops before they are harvested,” the statement reads.
