In an effort to overturn the Presidential victory Petition Tribunal’s decision to maintain President Bola Tinubu’s victory, the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have submitted 51 defense for appeal.
The Labour Party and Obi claimed that INEC failed to electronically transfer election results, but the court determined that this is not required by law.
In addition, the court determined that President Tinubu fell short of receiving 25% of the votes cast in at least two-thirds of the federation’s states and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The Tribunal further determined that the Labour Party and Obi had failed to provide evidence that Tinubu had been found guilty of money laundering in the US.
The five-person panel, presided over by Justice Haruna Tsammani, found that Obi and the LP had not proven any criminal arrest or conviction history against Tinubu. The court also rejected Tinubu’s argument that he lacked the legal standing to run for office.
