The US Department of State has advised Americans to reconsider traveling to Nigeria due to increased risks of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed gangs.
The advisory states that Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and northern Adamawa states have increased risks due to terrorism and kidnapping, while Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states have kidnappings. Kidnappings for ransom are common, often targeting dual national citizens and U.S. citizens with perceived wealth.
The US has limited ability to provide emergency services to citizens in many areas of Nigeria due to security conditions. However, citizens who choose to travel should carry proper identification, use caution when walking or driving at night, keep a low profile, review travel routes, be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs, monitor local media, stay alert, avoid demonstrations, review personal security plans, and establish a “proof of life” protocol with loved ones.
