Popular Nigerian investigative journalist, David Hundeyin has accused Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, of destroying ECOWAS following the news that three countries have withdrawn membership of the economic bloc.

The West African nations – Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger – quit the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an announcement in a joint communique released on Sunday by their respective military governments, accusing the bloc of “inhumane” sanctions to reverse the coups in their nations. Reacting to the news, Hundeyin wrote on X, “Thanks to one man’s recklessness, 2 of Nigeria’s 3 borders are now with non-ECOWAS countries. If anything happens to Benin, Nigeria will be geographically isolated from what remains of ECOWAS. This is what happens when your president is a foreign intelligence asset.”

Speaking further, he said, “Let it be on record that a withdrawal from ECOWAS is a vote of no-confidence on Nigeria – the predominant power in ECOWAS – and its leader who is the current ECOWAS chair. It took West Africa 48 years to build ECOWAS. It took a drug dealer just 8 months to destroy it.”
