Nigerian President Bola Tinubu was allegedly the first African leader to ring the closing bell at the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ) in September 2023.
However, a significant error was made by the Nigerian president, who claimed to be the first African president to do so. The error was attributed to a third-party event organizer, who unintentionally referred to Tinubu as the first African leader to do so. The Nigerian government has since apologised for the mistake. The NASDAQ, the second-largest stock exchange in the world, is located in New York.
However, SaharaReporters had stated that, in defiance to Ngelale’s assertion, former Tanzanian president Jakaya Kiwete rang the NASDAQ closing bell in 2011
The error was “deeply regretted,” the presidency said in a statement on Friday.
“Based on the information provided by a third-party event organiser, we unintentionally referred to President Bola Tinubu as the first African leader to ring the bell at NASDAQ on Wednesday in New York.”
“We now know that this information was false because a past African leader actually had the luxury. We really regret this oversight, the statement continued.
